Bringing Good News to the Poorest Neighborhood

            We Need Your Help

If all goes well, Ecclesia will purchase this former adult home at the end of February.
There is no time for a big song and dance about this project. The vision you read about can - and, by the Grace of God, will - happen.
               But, not without you.
               We need your help!
We have an opportunity to acquire this 17,500 square-foot
facility on half-an-acre at a great price - $265,000 -  on great terms from St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, an institution that believes in us and the absolute need to serve our community.
               But, we need your help!
We need to close on the property by March 1 in
order to get a property tax exemption worth $20,000. It will take $65,000 to complete the transaction and cover the three months of expenses we’ll incur before Phase I of our plan is up and operating enough to carry those costs.
               We can raise the money.
               But, we need your help!
As of February 1, we have
commitments of $30,000 in matching funds toward that goal. It means that every
            dollar you contribute will be
matched by a dollar up to $30,000. If you give us $10, we’ll have $20. If you give us $100, we’ll have $200 and so
            on.
               It’s that simple.
               We need your help!

            The gory details!

Now that you've imagined and even gotten a sense of where the property is and what it's like, you probably want to know even more, don't you?
               We thought so! So,
click here for a narrative, telling a brief history of the Holden Home and our plans for the Hope Center.
            Picture

            Come . . . Imagine. . .

. . . yourself being in the poorest neighborhood in the poorest city in the Hudson Valley, a neighborhood where upwards of 30 percent of the families live below the poverty level, where 38 percent of adults over the age of 25 do not have the equivalent of a high school diploma, where 30 percent of the workforce is unemployed, where the teen pregnancy rate is the highest in New York State, and where, in 2010, gang violence and street crime
had gotten so bad that they were discussed during White House briefings.

Now, imagine a place in that neighborhood that says . . .
Learn! . . . a  place where people of all ages, incomes, and abilities can learn communications skills . . . meet with a tutor . . . be coached on how to find and keep a job . . . learn how to balance a checkbook or cook a simple, nutritious meal on a budget . . . discover peace-making and anger management skills and ways of reducing anxiety and
            stress.
Feast! . . . a café where college students, neighborhood residents, and visitors can grab a cup of coffee or enjoy a tasty meal prepared by seasoned culinarians and those learning a new trade.
Discover! . . . a shop featuring works of art made by neighborhood residents as well as books, music, and fair trade items and staffed by persons who are currently homeless or unemployed.
Empower! . . .a project in which currently homeless or unemployed persons can find meaningful work refurbishing computers for distribution to the neighborhood’s children and offer free Wi-Fi service so those children will be more able to succeed in school.
Connect! . . . a clearinghouse where volunteers, service organizations, churches, not-for-profits, and others can communicate with one another and find ways in which they can work together to empower members of the community.
Meet! . . . a place where those who “have”and those who “have not” can discover the truth – that we are the same kind of different . . .
Explore! . . . an Urban Abbey where seekers and practitioners of every faith can participate in adult theological education, explore and practice the spiritual disciplines, meet with a spiritual director, or participate in a retreat program . . .
Hope! . . . a place where as many as 20 people live in community and find the comfort, safety, and support they need to effectively act out their faith in service to others .  . . or keep a job and grow as a person . . . or transition to a new life . . .
When you have done that . . . You will have imagined

            Take a look!

We know that you are an environmentally-sensitive kind of person and reluctant to spend some gas driving over to see the place. So we've collected some photos and arranged them in a series of slide shows for your viewing pleasure. Take a look and, while you do, Imagine:

            Where is it?

You'll find the Hope Center at 77 Grand Street, Newburgh, New York, 12550. Until two-and-a-half years ago, it was an adult home consisting of three buildings on about half an acre of land in the City's East End. Now that you've read about it and seen the photos, we figure that you probably can't wait to drive over to see the place and dream with us. Click here for a location map and driving directions.
